On a recent trip to Iceland, AgraKepak’s pelagic specialist Paul Sheary was informed that the Mackerel season in Iceland had gotten off to a slow start, with very few landings in June – only totaling about 2,300mt.
“Landings in July were okay, with about 37,000mt of Mackerel landed, but production in August has been slower than expected” says Sheary, “there was an upturn in landings between August 8th to August 16th before things slowed up again. Prices are holding firm due to low production levels and large markets such as Nigeria and Egypt are not taking as much production as usual due to the difficulties with currency, so processors are not under pressure to sell current stocks in order to make room for fresh production”.
